Foot Washing
Today’s author is Prince of Peace member, Fred Ogimachi.
It was the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry. No more miracles, no more public teachings, no more storytelling. Just one last dinner with those who had followed, witnessed, and lived with Him these past years. After this meal, one would betray Him, one would deny Him, and they all would run away and abandon Him. Jesus, to whom the Father had given power over everything, knew what was going to transpire. What would He do?

‘So, He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet.’ John 13:4-5a. Jesus, again having all the power, washed their feet while the betrayers, deniers, and cowards were in the room. The attitude in which He washed their feet was that of humility and service. Knowing that in a few hours He would hang on a cross for their betrayal, denial, and cowardice.
Jesus asked them if they knew what He had done for them. He tells them that as their Teacher and Lord He had washed their feet, and they should do the same. John 13:12-14. Of all the things Jesus might have done to make an impression on this final gathering and tell them what to do going forward, why foot washing?
Let’s lean into the idea that the foot washing was Jesus forgiving the betrayer, the denier, and the cowards. Washing away their sins. Linking forgiveness, service, and humbleness to our relationships with each other.
So when we walk in this world as Christ followers and we meet the deniers, the betrayers, and the fearful who will not follow, we in humility serve them. We do this not because they deserve it, not because we are obligated, but because during a meal a long time ago Jesus forgave both them and us.
Prayer: May you walk and serve humbly today knowing you are forgiven.
