The Risk of Good News
“Faith is not a private wager but a public risk that Jesus is worthy of trust when no other hope can be trusted.” – James M. Edwards[1]
In this Sunday’s gospel story (Luke 4:14-30), Jesus returns to Galilee and delivers a provocative message in his hometown synagogue. Quoting Isaiah, he announces that God’s Spirit has anointed him to bring good news to the poor, release to the captives, sight to the blind, and freedom to the oppressed. At first, the crowd marvels at his words, but their amazement quickly turns to anger when Jesus broadens the scope of God’s work beyond their community.
This moment sets the tone for Jesus’ ministry: his message is profoundly good, but it is also deeply challenging. It disrupts comfortable assumptions and calls for a radical reimagining of who belongs in God’s story. The good news is not limited to insiders; it extends to outsiders, the marginalized, and even enemies.
Theologian James Edwards reminds us that faith is not passive—it is a “public risk.” Jesus’ proclamation challenges us to take that risk, to live in ways that embody God’s vision of justice and mercy. How might God be calling you to step into this story? Are there places in your life where faith is inviting you to risk comfort, reputation, or security for the sake of others?
As we follow Jesus’ example, may we embrace the challenge of his message, trusting that God’s Spirit is with us as we share in the healing of the world.

Coming Together
What a blessing it was to have St. Paul Area Synod Assistant to the Bishop, Justin Grimm, work with our congregation over the past two days. In particular, his sermon Sunday morning was an energetic reminder of the transformative power of God’s story whenever it intersects with the human story. Like both Saul and Ananias, who maintain decidedly opposing world views, they’re brought together by God’s providence and both lives are forever changed.
Emerging in Hope
We have a tree just outside the front gate of our home that bursts forth in white blossoms each spring. When we purchased and moved into our townhouse in the summer of 2019, the flowers had already come and gone. It was such a surprise in the spring of 2020, while we were Covid-quarantined at home with our college kids, to be delighted by the absolute eruption of blossoms on the first day of May. And then again last spring, we watched with great anticipation for the tree to burst forth its flowers. Things are happening later this year but, as you can tell in the photo, it’s all about to happen.
God’s Love
God’s love and caring knows no boundaries. He knows us just as we are. Just who we are. There is NOTHING we can do to separate us from God’s love. It is truly that simple. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that. So….
Feed my Lambs
Jesus says “feed my lambs”. Caring for one another as God first cared for us is our calling as Christians.
