June 28-July 26 Worship Series
Honoring God is not about piling up words. It’s about getting out of God’s way and allowing God to work through us. It’s about admitting that apart from Christ living in and through us by the Holy Spirit, we will pursue gods that prey upon us and damage others. It’s about the perseverance of committing ourselves to the work that God has begun in us through the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
June 28: 1st Timothy 1: 12-17
We begin our series Honoring God with the promise that what we have been matters not to the God who is able to mold and form us to God’s service. As the grace of Christ overflows in us, it spills over that we might be examples to others to be God’s love in the world and to come to believe in Christ for eternal life.
July 5: 1st Timothy 6: 6-19
A tough word for today delivered to those who live in wealth and comfort that the world has never before known. We honor God, the writer of 1st Timothy tells us, by pursuing righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. In order to take that path, we must shun our chasing after senseless and harmful desires and the love of money.
July 12: 2nd Timothy 1: 1-14
“I to myself have neither power nor worth, patience nor love, nor anything right good.” Scottish poet George MacDonald observed that we do not gird up our own loins in order to be the people God needs us to be. When cowardice is our inclination, it is God who gives us “a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.”
July 19: 2nd Timothy 2: 8-15
We are limited, but the word of God is not. We may be imprisoned in many ways, but the word of God is loose and free. We die, but the word of God lives. As we continue to honor God, the writer of 2nd Timothy reminds us that whatever our situation, the word of God that holds us fast is strong and real and enduring.
July 26: 2nd Timothy 3: 14-4:8, 16-18
Perseverance matters. As the 2nd letter to Timothy wraps up, and as we conclude our Honoring God series, the writer makes the point that we must follow through on our focus on the faith that has been passed on to us else we find ourselves prey to competing messages that would supply us with what we want instead of what God knows we need.
