Zanzibar Nature
Today we had a chance to experience more of God’s creation with visits to the Jozani National Park and the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre.
We left our home base, the Tembo House Hotel, and drove about an hour east to the other side of Zanzibar. The Jozani National Park features a nature walk through mahogany, palms, eucalyptus, mango and mangroves. The highlight is the red colobus monkey, which is unique to Zanzibar. Our guide shared information on the plants we saw, and how they were used. We found a colony of monkeys and enjoyed watching them jump from tree to tree above us. One even ran across the path right next to us! We drove to the Mangrove boardwalk to learn more about these interesting plants. We also saw some crabs.
After Jozani, it was a short drive to the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre. This Centre provides income for families who raise the butterflies for pollination. We learned about the process and walked through the Butterfly garden to see how they hatch. There were at least 5 varieties flying around. Just outside the garden is a separate area for chameleons. One of them was partially fascinated by Caryn’s cell phone!
We headed back to town for a delicious lunch overlooking the ocean, and got some great sunset pictures!
