The Cloud of Saints is up in the Sanctuary. So many names to remember. I find my mom’s name, Stella. I also locate my brother and sisters’ names, Russ, Betty and Joan. My eyes travel over to my niece Beth. I miss them, love them and remember all they taught me about God’s love.
Beth, facing her final days saying, “it’s ok. I’m ok. I know I’m going home. I’ve been preparing to go home since the day I was born. I am confirmed in God’s love. Take care of my family. They need your presence and love.”
I remember mom and Betty repeatedly telling “it’s not where you do (to church), it’s THAT you go, listen and know God’s love. Then make a difference and stay involved. Show God’s love.”
Russ bailing me out as a teenager. He was the one I went to for solace and wisdom (and sometime to negotiate for me when I was in trouble). Just a stalwart presence. He never said much about God and though church was a pain. He was also the first one to volunteer to deliver meals, take the “church ladies” shopping or fixing whatever was wrong. While he may not acknowledge God, he lived a godly life.
So many good stories and love shared. They taught me the reality of God. Love. Honor. Commitment to those in need. I miss them and know they are looking down, laughing in delight with me, and waiting with God. They know I know I have been preparing all my life to go home. How about you? Amen.
