Jambo Spice Farm
We had a full day today at the Jambo Spice farm and gained a new appreciation for the hard working Mamas who prepared all our meals in Bomalang’ombe and Vikongwa!
Zanzibar is known for its spices. Our excursion today brought us to the Jambo Spice Farm, where our first event was a cooking class. The location was a traditional Tanzanian kitchen area. We learned how to peel and slice produce and spices, and how to extract coconut milk. The meal prep included rice pilau, curry, fish, chicken, greens, green banana and plantains. While the meal was cooking we took a walking tour of the farm and saw many spices and fruits. We saw a tree climbing demonstration and received hats, handbags and jewelry woven from palm branches and hibiscus. After the tour it was time for lunch so that we could taste the food we helped prepare. Delicious, and sure gave us a new appreciation for the effort involved! After lunch we had oranges, pomelo, watermelon, baby bananas and red bananas.
Finally, we could buy some of the spices!
We ended our day with a walking tour of Stone Town. Hard to believe that tomorrow we start the long trek home!
