We have heard the story of the prophet Nathan confronting king David about his coveting, rape and murder (2 Samuel 12:1-9). The Bible tells the story of God and humanity. God is present in the world to move it toward love and hope.
Many people have done family research to find out about the experiences of their predecessors and to understand more of how they have come to their present circumstances. Family history may help with understanding health issues and family interests and characteristics. I was unusual as a diabetic who has type 1 diabetes that only developed when I was in my 30’s. I didn’t know of any family history or risk factors. But a friend shared some information that he found in a 1918 small town newspaper. Our family always understood that my grandfather had died during the flu epidemic. The newspaper revealed that he had died of the flu while struggling with diabetes. Family history had a twist for me and helped me understand my own circumstances. Others have discovered skeletons in the closet of their family history. This story in 2 Samuel helps to reveal a human-family history. David was seen as a noble and powerful ruler who united Israel and expanded its influence. But, we also see his dark side and his deep sin. This family history helps us to understand the reality of flaws and failure even in one who was deeply admired. It helps us to acknowledge our own flaws and failures.
David was rich and powerful but when confronted by Nathan, he repented and sought forgiveness. He still experienced consequences but still was forgiven. As we read this story we can humbly acknowledge our own failures and seek God’s grace to bring hope for the human family.
Gracious God, give us humility to hear the human story with its strengths and failures, to learn from all who have preceded us and to seek the well-being of our world. Amen.
