Jesus, as a young age, sits in the temple and discusses theology with the elders. While his parents search long and hard for him, he sits in conversation. Comfortable and (I imagine) engaging.
As I was preparing for this devotion, I asked my 6- & 5-year-old grandkids why go to church. The answers: to see my friends, to set up bells, and to hear about God. What is church to you? A place of refuge from the stress of our world? A community that encourages learning about our relationship with God? A community of love and understanding? All?
A friend of mine states vehemently that she doesn’t need church. Church doesn’t fit her. She doesn’t need organized religion. While we agree to disagree, I have seen a shift in the last few years. We chat about what church is. How being involved can help your internal well-being, give you food for thought and make a difference in the world. Last week, she even stated, “I thought about going to church on Christmas but decided to stay home.” I invited her to come with me some Sunday just to see what is there for her.
What is there for you? When I hear a sermon that speaks to my heart, I walk away richer in my understanding of God’s calling and my response. I wish to see you soon. God’s calling.
