As we move into the second week of our series, “Complete Joy,” I’m reflecting on the powerful truths we’re encountering in 1 John. The apostle’s letter invites us to consider the nature of our relationship with God and the transformative power of divine love.
As we read last Sunday, in the opening verses of 1 John, we are reminded of the tangible reality of Jesus, who was seen, heard, and touched. This physical connection with Jesus grounds our faith in the historical reality of God’s presence among us. John emphasizes that living in the light means acknowledging our sins and trusting in God’s forgiveness. The assurance of Christ as our advocate brings us into a deeper fellowship, dispelling darkness and filling us with light.
Reflecting on these themes, Richard Rohr states, “Faith is not a belief system; it’s a way of living in relationship.” Our faith calls us into a transformative relationship with God, one that reshapes our actions and our understanding of ourselves.
In the third chapter from which we’ll read this Sunday, John reminds us of our identity as children of God. This profound truth reorients our lives, calling us to live in a manner that reflects our divine heritage. When we recognize ourselves as beloved children of God, we are empowered to turn away from all that we’ve done wrong and pursue a better path.
As Brené Brown emphasizes, “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do.” Embracing our identity in Jesus allows us to live authentically and courageously, confident in God’s love and grace.
This week, let’s commit to living in the light, embracing our identity as God’s children, and allowing God’s love to transform us from the inside out. May we experience the complete joy that comes from walking on the path with Jesus.
May God’s peace find you today. -Pastor Peter
Let us pray… Lord, help us embrace our identity as your beloved. May your love transform us, guiding us to live in your light and truth. Amen.
