Sacred Settlement PoP – An Update

A third tiny house has arrived on our campus!  Thanks to the amazing generosity of the leaders and staff of AbeTech, a Rogers, MN-based company, a new home is being prepared to help us expand our sacred settlement.  The home was constructed as a show of community support by AbeTech employees and they reached out to our partners at Settled. for a possible beneficiary of this effort.

The new home is slightly larger than the existing two homes.  So, the decision has been made to relocate our intentional neighbors, the Beary family, into the new home with its extra elbow room. We’ll then prepare the Beary’s current home to welcome another neighbor or couple experiencing chronic homelessness into our community of support, hopefully soon after the first of the year.

As the new home was built without the guidance of Settled, some additional modifications are necessary for the home to come into code compliance and to meet the specific needs of the community we are building.  We’re adding additional insulation, remodeling some of the interior, and adding a deck with stairway entry.  Last week, the fantastic team from Norse Electric installed an additional power source for the new home.

Our great volunteers have been upgrading the railings around the existing homes for more safety, especially in the winter months.  The homes have been positioned to take advantage of the existing paved pad to provide scrapable pathways when the snows start to fall again.  If you have any interest or availability to lend a hand with some of these remaining projects, please reach out to Kristin in our office.

Our Settlement Stewardship Team is now turning its attentions to the task of formalizing the process by which potential future neighbors will be identified and selected.  We know the need remains great.  Unsurprisingly, recent media attention has also brought forward more than a few inquiries into availability.  Wouldn’t it be great if we could send them to an even larger network of faith communities who are developing their own sacred settlements?  We pray this will soon be the case.
