“I’m bored.” I really can’t remember the last time I thought this. I’m not talking about the occasional activity, event, or conversation that grows tiresome in the moment. I’m talking about a more pervasive feeling. One that recognizes that not having greater purpose to the day or expectation for the time ahead can leave one unsatisfied. This is a feeling I have not had for a very long time. Until last week that is.
And, if I’m being completely honest, feeling bored last week was clarifyingly glorious. It means the generous gift of this congregation had accomplished one of its key goals, to refresh my spirit. The combined three months of time separated from the day-to-day responsibilities of serving as pastor for this church created space for me to let go of typical constraints and allow an unencumbered freedom with time to reshape and reset me at my core.
I know that my freedom from responsibility did not come without a cost. I am so grateful to the staff and ministry leaders who shouldered additional obligations in my absence, tending to our community of faith and its continued vibrancy. Thank you staff and leaders! By all accounts, we were well served by Pastor Walter and this congregation is the better for it. Thank you Walter! I am also grateful for all who summoned more patience and more understanding, while extending more grace in the face of my absent leadership. Thank you! My goal for the coming days is to reassure you that it was a worthwhile investment.
I’m eager to share the stories of all I have experienced during my sabbatical but will spare you in this moment. For today, I just want to focus on the giftedness that comes with sabbath “boredom.” And that in it, we might recognize the peace which leads to understanding. God is there, waiting patiently for you.
“So then, a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God,for those who enter God’s rest also rest from their labors as God did from his.”
Hebrews 4:9-10
May God’s peace find you today. -Pastor Peter
Let us pray… God of sabbath, in our resting moments, help us to find you. Amen.
