In Sigurd Olson’s book, The Listening Point, Sigurd writes about finding a place that one can dwell on their past, look at the wonders of the earth, and ponder what lies ahead. I have a place in the BWCA that fills this need.

The Stairway Portage is a short but hard portage that brings one from Duncan Lake to Rose Lake. The Border Route Trail crosses this portage, too, which makes for some wonderful hiking.

For many years my “Listening Point” was an overlook just east of the Stairway Portage. After 25 plus years of viewing Rose Lake from this overlook, a few of the trees have hindered my favorite view, so the waterfall at the Stairway Portage has become my new “Listening Point”. At this waterfall, I can picture all of the people I’ve brought to the portage, remember the many trips into the BWCA, and just marvel at the wonderful creation we’ve been given to dwell in.

For me, getting lost in my thoughts, at this waterfall, helps me get ready for another year of life. I think it’s important to reflect on the past, all the family and friends that have been part of your life, to reflect on one’s accomplishments and “failings”, and to just enjoy creation.

Where is your “Listening Point”?
What memories does it conjure up for you?
What accomplishments and “failings” do you dwell on?
What things in creation make you pause and just look in wonder, and awe?

If you don’t have a “Listening Point”, I hope you find one someday.

Dear God, help us take the time to pause and just listen to the world around us, being mindful of your creation, giving thanks for family and friends, and striving to use our talents to share your light with the world. Amen
