This will be a brief devotion.  I simply want to say that Descartes was wrong.  It’s because we are that I am.  That’s the secret, isn’t it? Except it’s not a secret. It’s something we know in our bones.  Sadly, however, that knowledge often gets lost in the busyness or the distractions or the growing pile of stuff that we work so hard to acquire, and that’s why I have been grateful for the one-to-one conversations I have shared with you over the last month.

You have constantly reminded me how important we are to each other. I hear it from you constantly.  I hear that relationships are essential as we pick each other up when we have fallen.  I hear that relationships are essential as we share with one another our wonder and joy over the beauty and sweetness of God’s good creation.  I hear that relationships are essential as we share our faith back and forth.

You remind me of when Jesus gave Mary and his disciple to each other the day he died on the cross.  He knew that at our core God has made us for each other, that you are God’s gift to me, and I am God’s gift to you.  Let us give thanks for that and never forget it.
