I have plenty of history with relying on the trail to get me where I need to go. Wandering the backcountry in the mountains, as long as you stay below the tree line, the routes are well marked. Even if snows cover the ground, the blaze marks carved into the bark of trees along the sides of the trail remain a helpful guide. But in expansive meadows or above the tree line, the piles of rocks that mark the way aren’t always so easy to find. And mountain trails, rarely go in a straight line.
On this coming 2nd Sunday of Advent, the prophet Isaiah reminds us that the Lord promises to “make straight a pathway in the wilderness” (Isaiah 40:3). This imagery invites us to ponder the ways in which God prepares and clears our pathways, even in the midst of the wilderness of life.
Life can resemble a vast wilderness, filled with uncertainties, challenges, and the unknown. In these moments, we may wonder how God will make our crooked paths straight. Isaiah encourages us to trust in the Lord’s faithfulness and ultimate plan. When faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable, we can take solace in the promise that God is actively working on our behalf.
God’s pathway-straightening is a mysterious and divine process. It involves God’s wisdom, timing, and a purpose that may not be immediately apparent. We’re likely to question the twists and turns in our journey, but God invites us to lean not on our understanding but to trust God’s providence (Proverbs 3:5-6).
As we navigate the uncertain terrain, let us rest in the assurance that God is actively at work, preparing a way for us. This is the promise the prophets proclaim. The seemingly desolate stretches of our journey are not obstacles but opportunities for God to showcase God’s power and grace. And Isaiah 40 reassures us that the God who created the universe is intimately involved in directing our steps.
In times of doubt, remember that the God who spoke the world into existence is more than capable of straightening the paths before you. During this season of Advent, trust in this goodness, and surrender your anxieties. In the hands of a divine way-maker, every wilderness will be transformed into a highway of hope, purpose, and unimaginable blessings.
