When David was appointed king, he inherited a nation in turmoil. This young man was expected to lead the Israelites out of civil war and into prosperity. Obviously, this seems to be an insurmountable task with very little chance of success. David, however, was not alone; he had God to lead him.
As a young man fresh out of college, I can’t help but feel the same sense of overwhelming dread. Our world faces problems much bigger than myself, and it is hard to see a way to combat anything, let alone enough to ensure a future for myself. I often find myself consumed with anger at those who came before me. It is not my fault that over 4,000 Palestinians died in 3 weeks from Israeli bombardment. It is not my fault that our climate has suffered irreparable damage. It is not my fault that almost 40 million Americans live below the poverty line. It is not my fault, but it is my responsibility to do my best to address these issues.
Unlike David, I do not possess the power of a king, but I do have God to lead me. It is only with the motivation of faith that I can take action. Instead of pondering how to magically solve all of the world’s problems, I can allow those near me to experience God through me. I can take the time to listen to a friend’s problems. I can spare a few dollars for the man on the corner I pass on my way to work every day. I can do something to just put a smile on the face of my loved ones. While this might not result in a perfect world, it certainly makes it a little bit better, and that is better than doing nothing at all.
