The story of Nathan “speaking truth to power” is a story to marvel at. Can you imagine someone approaching the most powerful ruler in Israel with a message of accusation. Nathan spoke most skillfully, in the form of a parable about a poor man and his tender care for his only lamb. In the same city, a wealthy man with many flocks and herds used his power, wealth and influence to take the poor man’s one lamb to serve a meal for a guest. David became outraged at the injustice and stated that the rich man deserved to die and David vowed that the rich man, who had acted without pity, would pay back fourfold what he taken. Then, came Nathan’s accusation: “You are the man!”
This certainly demanded courage. Who are the courageous prophets among us who are speaking “truth to power?” Are they protestors? Perhaps they are lawyers who bring difficult lawsuits or defend those with little voice from powerful mechanisms working to deport them. Perhaps it is people of faith hosting sacred settlement communities as witnesses to the needs of the homeless. Perhaps it is people at work to defend democracy. Perhaps it is legislators working for justice without any recognition for their work.
Please keep your eyes open for “Nathan”. He is speaking a word that is important to hear.
Prayer: God of justice: give us ears to hear truth as it is spoken among us. Let the power of your word be effective in calling us and guiding us. When we face the opportunity to share your grace and your truth, let us have courage. In your name we pray. Amen.
