John the Baptist, once so sure of Jesus’ mission, now sits in prison and asks, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” His question is raw, honest—born of disappointment and unmet expectations. Jesus doesn’t rebuke John for doubting. Instead, He points to the evidence of transformation: the blind see, the lame walk, the dead are raised, and the poor receive good news. Jesus is rewriting the story, but not in the way John expected.
Theologian Rachel Held Evans once wrote, “Doubt is not a sign of weakness but a sign of faith. It means we are taking our questions seriously.” John’s question didn’t mean his faith was gone; it meant he was wrestling with the reality of Jesus’ mission. We, too, face moments when faith doesn’t fit our expectations. But Jesus meets us there, not with condemnation, but with reassurance.
What doubts are you carrying? What questions feel too big to voice? Jesus invites us to bring them all, trusting that even in our uncertainty, God is still at work.
May you find yourself in God’s story today. -Pastor Peter
Let’s pray… God of patience, meet us in our questions and remind us that doubt does not separate us from You. Rewrite our uncertainty into deeper trust. Amen.
Note: Pastor Peter is traveling in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam through Feb. 26. Please keep him, Anne, and their companions in your prayers.
