“Jesus did not call isolated individuals to follow him. He formed a community, a movement, a new way of being human together.” – Diana Butler Bass
This Sunday, we’ll read Luke 6:1-16 when Jesus calls twelve disciples to follow him, an act that marks a turning point in his ministry. He doesn’t select the powerful, the wealthy, or the well-connected. Instead, he gathers fishermen, a tax collector, and those who would become known not for their status but for their willingness to follow.
Jesus calls them into something bigger than themselves—a shared purpose, a collective witness, a movement shaped by love and justice. In doing so, he shows us that discipleship is not a solo journey. The way of Jesus is always about community, about being woven together in a story greater than our own.
Diana Butler Bass reminds us that Jesus did not simply create followers; he formed a new kind of humanity. As we conclude this series, we are invited to recognize our own place in this movement. Who are we called to walk alongside? How do we embody Jesus’ vision for a transformed world? Like the twelve, we are chosen—not because of our perfection, but because God’s story continues through us.
May you find yourself in God’s story today. -Pastor Peter
Let’s pray… God of calling and community, bind us together in love and purpose. Help us follow Jesus with courage, faith, and a commitment to justice. Amen.
