In the story of the Exodus we listened to yesterday, the Israelites are instructed to mark their doorposts with the blood of a lamb as a sign of protection from the coming plague. This act of obedience and faith ensured that the angel of death would pass over their homes, sparing them from destruction. This moment in the Exodus story reveals a key aspect of God’s relationship with God’s people: God’s protection and faithfulness in times of crisis.
As Walter Brueggemann notes, “The blood on the doorposts signals Israel’s distinctive identity as those who belong to God’s promise and purpose.” The marking of the doorposts wasn’t just about physical protection; it was a sign of their covenant relationship with God. In times of uncertainty and fear, God’s people are reminded that they are marked by God’s promise and are held within God’s protective care.
Today, the story of the Passover continues to shape our identity as God’s people. We are still marked by God’s covenant, claimed as beloved children who are protected and guided through life’s challenges. While we may not always understand the circumstances we face, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to carry us through.
Take time this week to reflect on how you are marked by God’s promise. In what ways can you trust in God’s protection and guidance, even in times of uncertainty?
May God’s peace find you today. -Pastor Peter
Let’s pray… God of protection, remind us that we are marked by your promise and held in your care, even in moments of fear and uncertainty. Amen.
