As we enter the sixth and final week of our summer series, “Complete Joy,” we conclude our reading of 1 John with a passage that offers profound assurance about our faith and eternal life. Here, John emphasizes the certainty we have in our relationship with God through our belief in Jesus. This assurance is a cornerstone of our spiritual journey, providing confidence and peace amidst life’s uncertainties.

John reassures us that by believing in the Son of God, we receive eternal life, and this promise is secure. This assurance transforms how we live, offering a deep sense of purpose and hope. James Cone, a Black Liberation Theologian, reflects on this by saying, “Hope is what keeps us moving forward in the face of despair.” This hope rooted in assurance empowers us to navigate challenges with faith and resilience.

Moreover, Henri Nouwen reminds us that, “Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. It is the belief that God will do what is right.” This perspective shifts our focus from our desires to trusting in God’s vision for the world. Understanding that our eternal life is assured encourages us to live authentically and lovingly, confident in God’s unwavering promise.

This week, let’s embrace the assurance that our faith provides. Let this confidence deepen our trust in God and inspire us to live out our beliefs with courage and joy. As we reflect back on the richness of John’s message, may we find comfort in knowing that our eternal life is secure, and let this assurance fill us with gratitude.

May God’s peace find you today. -Pastor Peter

Let’s pray… Gracious God, may your promise sustain us, reminding us that our faith is anchored in a love that is steadfast and everlasting. Amen.
