Yesterday, we encountered the familiar story of Ruth, one not only of a faithful daughter-in-law but a profound witness to God’s enduring promise of love. Ruth, a Moabite woman, faced with challenges and hardships, exemplifies a steadfast commitment to love and loyalty, mirroring God’s unwavering devotion to us.
Ruth’s journey begins in the land of Moab, a place foreign to the promises of the God of Israel. Yet, despite the loss of her husband and her homeland, she clung to her mother-in-law, Naomi. This decision to follow Naomi back to Bethlehem was more than a geographical move; it was a spiritual journey, a leap of faith.
As Ruth gleans in the fields of Boaz, her story intertwines with the overarching narrative of God’s enduring love. Boaz, reflecting God’s kindness, offered Ruth protection and provision. Just as God provides, Boaz ensured that Ruth’s journey was met with kindness and compassion.
But it’s not just Ruth’s loyalty and Boaz’s kindness that tell of God’s enduring promise of love; it’s the concept of ‘hesed.’ Hesed, often translated as “steadfast love” or “lovingkindness,” is a central theme in the story of Ruth. It refers to the enduring, covenantal love that God has for God’s people. It’s a love that remains constant, no matter the circumstances. Ruth’s hesed towards Naomi and Boaz’s hesed towards Ruth both echo the divine hesed, reminding us of God’s unwavering love for us.
In Ruth’s story, we see that hesed transcends borders, nations, and cultures. Ruth, a foreigner, is embraced and welcomed into the lineage that is to include King David and, ultimately, Jesus. This is a testament to God’s promise to love all people, regardless of their background or past, and to graft them into God’s family.
In our own lives, we encounter challenge and hardship. We may feel like outsiders in a world that seems foreign and unforgiving. Yet, the story of Ruth reminds us that we are not alone. God’s enduring promise of love surrounds us, offering protection, provision, and a ‘forever’ home in God’s family.
As we reflect on the journey of Ruth and the enduring promise of love, may we be inspired to show hesed to others, to love with a commitment that knows no bounds. And may we rest assured that, just as God remained faithful to Ruth and Naomi, God remains faithful to us, no matter the trials we face. In the midst of life’s challenges, remember that God’s hesed is the constant, unwavering force that sustains us and keeps us within the shelter of God’s love.
