Today we begin Vacation Bible School or VBS. You may have memories of attending VBS when you were a kid or being a leader when your kids were young. It is a time of anticipation, of excitement, of fun, of learning and maybe a little chaos! Lots of planning goes into VBS, but it is not until the youth leaders and the kids show up on Monday morning that VBS becomes a reality.
This year our theme is Food Truck Party and we are hearing stories of food from the Bible. Favorite stories like manna in the wilderness and Elijah and the widow and feeding of the 5,000. Our theme verse is from Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread.”
For weeks we’ve been creating sets – a cardboard food trucks, ice cream stand, jumbo ice cream cones, big popsicle, popcorn container and oversized taco. We have collected plenty of play food and created menu boards. We will play, sing, do science experiments, eat, laugh and more.
The story of Elijah and the widow that we heard in worship yesterday – and will hear at VBS on Tuesday – is one of scarcity. Elijah is hungry. The widow has only enough to make one small loaf of bread for she and her son. But somehow, someway, in reliance on God, it doesn’t run out. There is enough. God provides daily bread for them day by day. Similar to God providing manna in the wilderness to Moses and the people. What is it that God is providing for you each day? How do we help everyone to have enough?
Come Lord Jesus be our guest and let these gifts to us be blessed. And let their be an ample share on every table everywhere. Amen.
